Halloween Week is our Favorite Week!

Halloween has always been Bully in the Hallway's favorite time of year. We've had the great pleasure of having a few great Halloween shows in years past where we got away with playing a few covers like "She Don't Use Jelly," "Cashing In" and even a brief rendition of "Listen to the Music."

Well, we've told you about our upcoming show where we're playing Fugazi as "Boogazi" along with friends Cealed Kasket, Slushy and Darkness and Goblin King at Exit on 10/31, but we thought we'd chime in to share some thoughts and previews for some of the other great Halloween shows that are stacking up as well.

Bully Halloween show, 2009?

Our good friends in Secret Colours are behind the Spookadelic - A Psychedelic Halloween, kicking off Thursday 10/27. It's at SubT, features Goose Island beer specials, an oil-projection, and the musical styles of Secret Colours, The Vacant Lots, Troubadour Dali, and Radar Eyes. There's even a free mixtape!

Friday you can head over to Double Door to see Chicago favorites White Mystery, JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound, Satan's Youth Ministers and DJ Sloppy White in an XRT Halloween show.

Saturday 10/29 has a lot of great options as well, with the Husker Dudes, the"Only Husker Du cover band" to play all Husker tunes at Quenchers along with Daemon Familiar as Sugar, doubling up the Bob Mould factor, and Knife of Simpson is coming as the lovable Danzig.

If you head south on Western to the Empty Bottle on 10/29 you'll also find Football, the Mannequin Men, Outer Minds and Coffin Pricks. No strangers to Halloween changeovers, I've heard that the MM may be going as an early iteration of the Cure, and we all know Football is going to continue their relentless onslaught of Chicago.

Here's Football playing a gig this summer at the Logan Square Monument, in full traditional Indian Garb. This wasn't even a Halloween show yet they showed up in costume.

In addition to This Must Be The Band (a year-round Talking Heads Tribute) playing at Beat Kitchen, Sunday 10/30 brings out a great bill that I literally just got wind of - Sebadoh and Chicago locals Mazes play Schubas. Not sure if it's a Halloween show or not, but I'm just wondering how did this fly under the radar!?!

And finally, we all know what's happening Monday 10/31, right?? But if you're not in a Fugazi/Exit mood, you can always head to Empty Bottle to see Sybris play with Apteka, Touched by a Ghoul and the Bingers. Or do it all!

Interview with Slushy from Chicago

I first met Chris Kramer, lead singer and primary songwriter for Slushy at my old work. We immediately started trading guitar gear... I think he still may have one of my old amps. Anyway, he as he explains below he first started playing guitar and singing solo in Chicago over a drum machine/tracks before building a full band. I really like his deceptively intricate pop/punk song writing, and he's got one of the best and most natural singing voices I've heard in a long time. We're excited to play with Chris, who will be backed by the Chicago-area Uh-Bones and will be playing songs by the Velvet Underground and Nico our Halloween Show at Exit. The show also features Cealed Kasket and Darkness & Goblin King, is FREE and starts at 9pm.

- Can you tell us a bit about the evolution of Slushy from Omaha to Chicago?

Slushy is a Chicago band. I started writing garagey/pop songs in 2007 when I was living in Omaha, and some of the songs that Slushy plays date back to then but most are newer. Shortly after moving to Chicago I started playing solo as Kramer Versus Kramer, but that we just a transitory phase. Then I got a band together, then after a bit we came up with a better name. The first real Slushy show was in July 2010 at the last ever Mopery show.

- I know you've played your share of house shows as well as Chicago venues. What do you think are the benefits of either, and is there any preference at all for either format?

Slushy has been lucky to play a lot of well known venues in Chicago, like the Empty Bottle, Schubas, Subterranean and Beat Kitchen. We've also played a lot of DIY venues. Big venues are cool because they feel like an important stepping stone. But it takes a lot more people to reach the "fun" threshold at real venues. People feel like they have to be more reserved at venue shows, and can only have fun if there are tons of other people and they can get lost in anonymity. Usually you have to play a lot of poorly attended, little-fun shows before the venue will have you back to play a well attended show. House shows and alternative venues seem to attract people who are already friends and don't give a shit about what everyone will think if they dance and have fun. So even if there are only 10 people there, those 10 people are having a blast.

- I love your song "Teenage Frankenstein" - are you working on any other holiday-themed songs?

Not actively, but I really like making up songs, so who knows what the next one I make up will be about.

- Why did you pick Velvet Underground and Nico as your Halloween Band?

They have a great spooky, creepy, evil vibe, but they really just wrote great pop songs. Plus I really like the guys in Uh Bones and have been looking for a reason to play music with them.

To describe them as anything else but a “rock band”—to add a bunch of adjectives describing their songs and the sound of their guitars—would be pretty self-indulgent and pointless. You know what rock songs sound like, right? Heavy drums, yelling, chords? They sound like the blue-collar, middle-of-the-country version of that, which is fitting since they’re from Chicago. We talked to guitarist/vocalist Billy Kenefick and vocalist John Matthew Simon recently about their new album Crooks and Their Castles, taking vocal lessons, and doing everything from the music to the PR work themselves.

Record Store Day instantly became one of my favorite days. Forget Coachella! This was happening in my own backyard...

Joan of Arc was great at Reckless, and Saki Records was as cool as I could have hoped - a real musical outpost! I got there just in time to see the 1900s. I also saw Rabid Rabbit and In Tall Buildings. It was a fantastic day! I hope we can play Saki sometime soon.

Our album is coming along... 54+ hours in we have tracked 10 new songs including the venerable "9to5er", the posturing "Golden Bones", and the fresh yet reviled "Life Is Money" to name a few. Nonetheless we have yet to decide on a title; toiling with the permanence. Examples: "On the Upside of Down." "Are We Loud Enough?" "Aggregator" are some ideas we have plugged thus far... Plus the fact that three of us are derived from the Journalistic brood, and teeter in torment over what questions, cliches, cancerous metaphors, and other uncomfortable jargon the garrulous crows will squawk once their beaks are fed.

However, we take comfort in fact that if we can't fall in line we can always name the work "Ocean Blanket".

I mean that is hysterical and brilliant. The fact that someone else has posited what an ocean blanket could be is just wonderfully bombastic and joy-filled.

We also watched documentaries covering topics including: the making of Aerosmith's "Pump," a colorful look at Rush's rock legacy as well as an encore showing of Classic Albums: Nevermind (a hit during the Advice EP sessions).

We spent last Saturday and Sunday at the beloved Phantom Manor, and I'm about 30 minutes from being picked up by Kennedy to head right on back. So far we've focused on mic setups for drums, guitars, bass and tracking. We played late into the night Saturday and Sunday. We even managed to completely re-structure the beat for a song (for the better) so we're excited to share that with everyone when it's done. Ok now for some pics from last weekend...

Our show last Friday at Subterranean was a great one indeed....dare I say our best show of 2011? We debuted a new song, "Life is Money", played "Famous Young Monsters" from our Advice EP live for the first time, and we even through in the old favorite "I've Been Meaning to Say" from our dear Apples and Sunshine LP.

Here's some fantastic pics (thanks Amanda!), including a shot of our buddies Verona Red who debuted their entire new EP Pound in a 1.5 hour set that even included a full horn section playing "Vehicle" and "Pump it Up." Talk about work effort!

After two wonderful shows at the Hideout in Chicago and at Mike N' Mollys in Champaign-Urbana, we rounded out our October, or as Bill would say "Rocktober", with a night at our buddies' bar in Milwaukee The Bad Genie Rock Lounge...

This weekend wasn't going to be another night of us driving up, playing, drinking, sleeping, fucking/dreaming, and then packing up to head home. Oh no... We decided to bring as many friends as we could up to the show(s). It just so happen that LCD Soundsystem/Hot Chip and Five Finger Death Punch were nice enough to open for us the night before at the Rave. What a spectacle it was!!! 50+ BITH friends up in Milwaukee for an entire weeks end! Oh no! Besides being those fucking kids these days, destroying hotels, enlivening Milk Town, and overall bringing back "the" swagger... We plain had fun, fun, fun... FUN!

After a riotous affair at The Hideout it was time for BITH to venture outside the comforts of Chicago. We picked up, packed up, and ventured out to Champaign-Urbana and the lovely campus of the University of Illinois. Which was inviting, endearing, and comforting. Oh how we were jarred and tossed back to memories of the good old college days. Fast food, fast women, fast brews, and short-term memory loss. Oh those days.

We rolled into town early to grab some beers and spread the word.

Hiding Out In The Chi

Ah yes... We have neglected to update our blog over the past few weeks because of one moment of fun after another. However this will be the last time that such neglect occurs. It is my November 17th resolution to keep the world in the loop. So over the next few days we will be posting about the past 6 weeks of Bullydumb.

At last juncture we were auditioning for the RedBull TV show "Rock the Route", which they regretfully passed on us for... Nonetheless two of our favorite Chicago bands and friends (Young Jesus and Brighton, MA) were selected.

Wow what an incredible time... Smack dab in the middle of the Goose Island industrial park is this musical gem called The Hideout. It was our first time playing what is one of the best venues in the Midwest. It is a tranquil and serene scene that feels very much like a rock n' roll treehouse. On October 8th, 2010 we were fortunate to join our friends The Record Low and Blueheels on stage at this lovely staple of Chicago. 28 SEPTEMBER LISTEN: Bully In The Hallway’s “Magnanimous Corpses”

Seeing as we’re in the thick of fall and next month is October, the Halloween month, we thought we’d share this track, aptly titled “Magnanimous Corpses”, from Chicago rockers Bully In The Hallway.

The track comes from their latest release, Advice EP, and is quite the rocker indeed. It opens with some grungy guitar bends, which leads to some staccato, Fugazi-style vocals before closing with some early Foo Fighters-era Dave Grohl screams. Check out “Magnanimous Corpses” at the left.

07/13/2010 Fireside Show! And News...

We were fortunate to play the 2nd show of the FIRESIDE BOWL revival. Which we were extremely elated to partake in. As a Chicago teen full of unwarranted and in-need-of-channeling angst, Fireside was a well of release for my friends and I. We saw some wonderful shows there, from Piebald to Link 80 to Slapstick to Alkaline Trio to Apocalypse Hoboken to The Impossibles to My Chemical Romance and Rise Against when they were first on circuit. There are too many memories to recall, nonetheless we plan on retaining and making many more memories now that it has reopened.

Aaron's getting married!

As you may or may not know, our beloved bass player extraordinaire Mr. Aaron Levinsky is tying the knot to his beautiful fiance Julia this Saturday. Aaron met Julia at Empty Bottle (I was there) in the Pre-Bully-Era (but not too far before the band). I've known Aaron since freshman year of high school and have played music with him for years. When Simon, Kennedy and Jannotta and I decided to start jamming Bully tunes it didn't take more than a second to know who to ask to help with the bass duties.

Where have we been and what have we been doing?

Ok soooo you haven't heard from us in a while aside from shameless repetitive promotion, so here's the best attempt I can do at a recap.

Your friends in Bully in the Hallway just recently wrapped up the busiest and (basically) most productive 64 days in our nearly 3 year history. Just what do I mean by that and what have we done?

1. Recorded, Mixed and Mastered a brand new EP - the "Advice EP" + Merch
As a band, we have written 30+ songs over the years (and counting). Last summer's release of "Apples and Sunshine" was a long way in the making, topping off at just over a year from start to glorious finish including recording, mixing, mastering, artwork and kickass album release show at the Double Door. After a fall and winter of playing local shows promoting the album, we wanted to do something different in early spring and also have a new record to promote. We had been having great response to our newer songs and knew we needed to get something online STAT. In the spirit of the 60's era 7" double-side single, we called up our good buddy Mike Lust at Phantom Manor to "spend a weekend recording a song or two" with the hopes of putting out something current to our sound, energetic and fast. The result was the "Advice EP" - two of our favorite stage-tested songs "Advice" and "Magnanimous Corpses," plus a new song "Famous Young Monsters," which was crafted just in the weeks before the sessions to add some color. That's right...while you've known for a while that this is available online, in the weeks following its completion we had it pressed by our good friends at Veoba. Many thanks to our buddy Jordan Snow for helping out with our artwork. And yes, we will be recording again soon.

Speaking of Veoba, we also designed and produced our first line of real merch - the beloved 't-shirt.' Thanks to our pal/frequent photographer Justin James for helping with the super fresh design, and Veoba for helping us print, produce and have our shirts on the table within a great turnaround time. Talk about service! In a completely biased opinion (based on experience)- we think Veoba is fantastic for bands.

2. SHOWS

Holy hell have we had some good shows.

On April 7th we had the privilege of playing with Titus Andronicus along with The Saps at the Bottom Lounge. To share the stage at a packed (and I mean packed) house with not only a fantastic band like Titus, but great people was a thrill for us. You can read more about the show here at the Consequence of Sound review. I'll post some pics of this show soon.

Fast forward to May 29th and we found ourselves opening for the Smoking Popes with Shot Baker at Lincoln Hall! Needless to say it was an unbelievable experience. With Lawrence Arms, the Broadways, The Falcon and the Smoking Popes being influences on us, sharing the stage with these Chicago legends was something we won't ever forget. Not to mention, Lincoln Hall is a top-notch venue in regard to sound quality, professionalism and experience for all.

Ok enough gushing - here are some pics!

Yes you will notice that at this particular show, the role of Aaron was played by our very talented and good friend Jon Reyes - a fantastic bassist!

Behind the Apples vol 1.4 - "Overdubs"

So you may have heard that we're heading back to Phantom Manor to record a few new songs for a digital single/ep project (yet unnamed), but before that I wanted to share a few more notes about the recording process behind Apples and Sunshine.

Overdubbin' !!

After we scheduled and completed our first studio blocks, we found ourselves facing a delay that was unavoidable: Simon needed surgery to remove his tonsils, and as a result we had to spread out our scheduling over the spring and summer. We completed vocals and overdubs during this period and here are some of my favorite overdub highlights:

"Steal the Wind It's Free"

This song's bridge was initially a samba-style beat when it was written and worked out in our North Avenue sweatbox practice spot. By the time it made it to the studio, the bridge was a lot more fun - Aaron had written a fantastic syncopated bass lick and Jannotta had broken down the beat into a much more powerful hip hop style. In the studio, Jannotta and Kennedy (under the direction and vision of Jannotta) added shakers, clicks and djembes. As a final touch, I took my Ibanez delay and whammy bar to add that wirey guitar effect. Jannotta manually twisted the delay time knob to increase and magnify the choppy decay, which was especially present during the final few seconds of the song.

"Infernal Machines"

This song has a distinctive intro that was created practically on the fly in the studio. Mike and I had isolated some feedback that was a bit abrasive as well as in key with the song. We looped it a few times, and then had Kennedy come in and read some passages of a Winston Churchill speech in his best (and stunningly accurate) Churchill voice. So yea, that's Churchill...

"Another Lover"

This song had a guest musician who during the overdubbed guitar solo who was unfortunately unheralded until now: Francie the dog. Francie, along with Amanda, Alexis had come to visit the studio and provide some great homemade tacos to a hungry band. During a romp around the studio, our four legged friend decided to show off her guitar skills. If you listen carefully at the end of the first solo, you will hear a distinctive 'screeeaatcchhhhhh.' This was confidently played by Francie who popped in the control room, pounced on my guitar and slapped the strings with her paw as I was sustaining the final note. This grand finale topped off what became the best take of the solo.

"Crossing the Bar"

Kennedy arranged and recorded this song all by himself. The lyric is an Alfred Lord Tennyson poem of the same name. He played the song solo with only an acoustic guitar and his voice in two perfect takes. He then added his own arrangement of harmonica, resulting in what I feel is one of the most moving tracks on the album.

"Experience by Osmosis"/ "I've been meaning to say"

Austin Mayer was my roommate at the time, and is a very talented and well-studied Jazz musician and saxophonist. We wrote the song "Experience by Osmosis" originally with me on piano and Kennedy on guitar, but that never translated well live (we've never used a piano on stage). When we brought it to the studio, I still wanted to keep a little piano in the bridge of the song in the bridge and we thought "wouldn't it be funny if we had some sax on here?" The bride was a half-time version of the same verse chords, initially featuring jazzy major 7th piano chords of the same progression, accentuated by Jannotta's loose drumming which made it seem slower than the rest of the song. I shared the rough demo with Austin who then wrote his own melody at home, later to come to the Manor and lay down his solo in about 4 takes. We were floored - it really added a new dimension to the song, as well as a nice surprise not only to people who knew Austin, but we hoped to music fans in general. Before he left, we had him try out some solos at the end of "I've been meaning to Say." It was late at this particular session, and we were getting tired but Austin's playing really seemed to fire up Mike who did a great job at getting Austin to play the wild string of notes that appear at the very end of the album.

Behind the Apples vol 1.3 "First weekend at the Manor"

Our recording sessions at Phantom Manor began with an entire Saturday and Sunday blocked off - February 23 and 24 of 2008. We had no idea how much time we needed, but I think we estimated about 3 weekends (6 days). HAH. Anyway, our first weekend was definitely an interesting but of course fun and rewarding experience.

As you can see in this photo, we weren't sure as to how much equipment to bring, so we brought nearly everything except the amps. Setting up and miking the drums ate up a lot of time, but the fact that we could let the drums ring out in the old vintage wooden room, while all playing and tracking rhythm was exciting – remember that our previous recording experience although fun was a lot more rigid and stale, with each of us tracking one at a time in a small box. Our goal for the weekend was to get drums, bass and as much usable guitar tracked as possible. To get things going we started with “The Bored,” a simple enough track that we had been playing nearly as long as “Chicago,” or “The Shakeup.” It was written on acoustic guitars one evening in the kitchen of the since-demolished/rebuilt former Casa de Simon on Wrightwood, on the same night and in the same setting that we wrote “I’ve Been Meaning to Say.” The style and sound of both “The Bored” and “I’ve been Meaning to Say” couldn’t have turned out more different on the record, but both had roots from an acoustic weekend evening. (Note to self: get new acoustic guitar and have more nights like that).

After a few takes of “The Bored” we moved on to “(You Can’t) Control Her,” which was also not too difficult to get down in a few takes. We then tracked “Infernal Machines,” one of our more difficult songs to this day, especially in the drum department. Jannotta did especially well on this track, and his perfectionism and quality control played a major role in getting the crisp, clean take that moves the track as you hear it now.
Our good friend Chris Ciesiel made an appearance that Saturday morning, taking some of the photos you see here in this post.

It’s not too hard to get comfortable in the Manor, and it’s equally easy to get distracted by the music magazines, books, movies, instruments and of course the fridge. Oh, not to mention – Mike Lust! Bloody Mary in hand, Mike was a pro at getting a bunch of over-excited visitors to focus on being musicians. With plenty of anecdotes, jokes and stories, he helped us balance between serious playing and relaxing and enjoying ourselves. Throughout the first weekend, in addition to “The Bored,” “Infernal Machines” and “(You Can’t) Control Her” we tracked “Bar Wrought,” “Steal The Wind, It’s Free,” “Chicago,” “I’ve Been Meaning to Say,” “Experience by Osmosis” and “The Shakeup.”

The song “Another Lover” hadn’t been written yet, and Kennedy’s arrangement of “Across the Bar” wasn’t tracked this particular February weekend – but more on that later!

Behind The Apples Vol 1.2 - "A Look Back Before Going Forward"

Flashback - A Demo is Made, "Danger: Shallow People"

Apples and Sunshine is not Bully In The Hallway's first recording... Oh no! There are in fact several recorded practice sessions (from our days pre-dating even having a practice space) which were recorded at CPE Sound, a song recorded for a yet-to-be-released Elbo Room sampler (anyone seen one yet?), a recorded radio show from "Chicago Acoustic Underground" (which was far from acoustic) and of course, our initial demo entitled "Danger: Shallow People." Before talking more about our time at Phantom Manor with Mike Lust working on Apples and Sunshine, I figured I'd take a moment to talk about our "Danger" demo.

It must have been sometime in spring of 2007 and after finding our first 'real' practice spot as a band, we knew the next step was to get a demo to local venues in order to play shows. Simon did some searching on this website called Myspace.com and got in touch with a fellow named Adam who worked at Humboldt Park-based studio called Sentient Studios. We booked about 12 hours to record and mix a 5 song demo. Plenty of time, right?

So in anticipation of our first recording experience, we practiced and practiced our 5 song set, which included "Chicago," "9 to 5er," "They Barely Bopped Their Heads at Ladytron," "Stickin' to our Guns" and "Tears for Jeers." Our practice space then was an old converted factory on North Avenue, housing a mix of about 150 bands, several live-in 'artists' and who knows who else. In the dead of winter, it was about 78 degrees on average in our one-light room. We always locked it with additional padlock for security each time we left, and we only used the 'freight' elevator of death once to move our stuff. We practiced and practiced in the stifling, breezeless humidity and heat of a Chicago spring until one lovely Friday night we headed down the street to the studio to record. (On a side note, we have since switched to a new practice space after part of the ceiling fell and hit Jannotta in the head during pratice).

Recording each piece of the record track by track was difficult for us... a band who was only used to playing live together in a dreary, hot practice spot. Some takes came out fast, some were slow, and I remember the funniest part was that we all came with our instruments to play on the first night, which ended up only being tracking for drums. We mixed each song on the fly, and somehow managed to track 5 songs in a weekend.

All in all, I'd say our demo sounds pretty hilarious but that's only because I was there during and after the recording session. I'll be damned if all of our friends and just about every venue in the city didn't get a little blue cd with our 4 songs on it (our "9 to 5er" didn't make the cut). We were proud of it then, and we still are today. While of course "Chicago" was re-recorded for Apples and Sunshine, every now and then "Stickin' to Our Guns" appears in a set and "9 to 5er" has since been completely revamped from it's mellow inception into a full-out rocker that we play quite often (re-debuting at our Schuba's show). The other songs have all but dried up, but since writing this article I am wondering if we'll give them a spin on some of our upcoming sets just for fun.

We're about one month or so away from the two year anniversary of our first recording session at Phantom Manor Recording Studio with Mr. Mike Lust, circa February 2008.

Holy Crap! Two YEARS!

As we all know, it took us about a whole year to complete the tracking, overdubs, vocals, mixing, mastering and artwork that has thus resulted in the critcally acclaimed, worldwide rock and roll sensation known as Apples and Sunshine.

Anyway, in honor of this notable event in rock, I'd like to contribute a few posts about the making of this album in a new mini blog series known as "Behind the Apples"

Why Phantom Manor, and where is that you may ask?

I (Billy) first heard of Phantom Manor after seeing a now defunct but incredible Chicago band, The Narrator, play a few times in Chicago. The first was at Empty Bottle with Karma with a K opening (also on hiatus), The Narrator second and the up and coming band Maps and Atlases headlining. What a show! M&A killed it, as I recall, playing their sped-up, loud yet digestible combo of math rock and hardcore. Karma with a K's frontman hung from the speakers, while the drummer pounded nonstop. And I'm pretty sure a few members of the Narrator were kind of drunk, but they were completely charming and engrossing. Needless to say, I was thoroughly impressed by the lineup and since have also collected Merethra by Karma With a K album and also Trees, Shallows and Houses by Maps and Atlases.

Not too long after that show, I found myself a big fan of all three bands, especially The Narrator. If you haven't had an opportunity to hear them, I highly recommend you do. They are the perfect mix of punk, oddball indie, rock and pop. Their songs are unpretentious as they are unique, and their lyrics of Sam and Jesse complement each other - simple, weird and engaging. I bought their latest (and ultimately last) album, All that to the Wall a few weeks after the Empty Bottle show. The CD said in its notes that it was recorded with Mike Lust at Phantom Manor in Chicago.

Some months after the show at the Empty Bottle I found myself at another Narrator show, this time with the Mannequin Men at the Metro. Wow, the Mannequin Men were LOUD and seemingly soaked in Whiskey (as Simon would say...). The Narrator was amazingly 3x better than they were at the Empty Bottle. Their cover of Dylan's "All the TIred Horses" was an incredible singalong, including Kevin from the MM who hopped onstage. During their set, I saw my old high school classmate Matt Holland (then with Spiller Whale, now with Vacations) and I remmembered that Spiller Whale's EP was also recorded with Mike Lust at Phantom. I asked Matt something like "How was it ?" and he had nothing but good things to say, including great value for quality...as well as something to the effect of "Mike's a character...make sure you drink with him."

Hey Everybody!

Happy New Year. Welcome to 2010! The year of the Tiger (Who happens to be a jungle bully; Omen) We have a lot going on in the next couple weeks.

First off. We want to thank our friends who have hooked it up this January! We are sure to have a good time!

The Wilmot gig was canceled, but we still intend to have a killer January.
