Record Store Day 2012 in Chicago

Last year, Record Store day was one of our favorite days of the year. We saw Joan of Arc, in Tall Buildings and the 1900's play! This year should be no exception for great bands. After a 5 min google session, here's a semi/work in progress list of what's cracking in Chicago on Record Store Day 2012.

That's right - Bully in the Hallway is going to SXSW 2012!! It's been a dream of ours to hit the road and roll down to Austin, and this year we're finally doing so in support of our latest release, "Crooks and their Castles."

We are absolutely THRILLED to be invited to play at the Wahoo's Fish Taco's SXSW 2012 showcase in Austin Texas. The poster is below and we'll share the final details soon (set times, other bands, etc). If you are in the AUSTIN Area, be sure to make it to this show. We're also working on other shows, we'll keep you informed...

Halloween Week is our Favorite Week!

Halloween has always been Bully in the Hallway's favorite time of year. We've had the great pleasure of having a few great Halloween shows in years past where we got away with playing a few covers like "She Don't Use Jelly," "Cashing In" and even a brief rendition of "Listen to the Music."

Well, we've told you about our upcoming show where we're playing Fugazi as "Boogazi" along with friends Cealed Kasket, Slushy and Darkness and Goblin King at Exit on 10/31, but we thought we'd chime in to share some thoughts and previews for some of the other great Halloween shows that are stacking up as well.

Bully Halloween show, 2009?

Our good friends in Secret Colours are behind the Spookadelic - A Psychedelic Halloween, kicking off Thursday 10/27. It's at SubT, features Goose Island beer specials, an oil-projection, and the musical styles of Secret Colours, The Vacant Lots, Troubadour Dali, and Radar Eyes. There's even a free mixtape!

Friday you can head over to Double Door to see Chicago favorites White Mystery, JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound, Satan's Youth Ministers and DJ Sloppy White in an XRT Halloween show.

Saturday 10/29 has a lot of great options as well, with the Husker Dudes, the"Only Husker Du cover band" to play all Husker tunes at Quenchers along with Daemon Familiar as Sugar, doubling up the Bob Mould factor, and Knife of Simpson is coming as the lovable Danzig.

If you head south on Western to the Empty Bottle on 10/29 you'll also find Football, the Mannequin Men, Outer Minds and Coffin Pricks. No strangers to Halloween changeovers, I've heard that the MM may be going as an early iteration of the Cure, and we all know Football is going to continue their relentless onslaught of Chicago.

Here's Football playing a gig this summer at the Logan Square Monument, in full traditional Indian Garb. This wasn't even a Halloween show yet they showed up in costume.

In addition to This Must Be The Band (a year-round Talking Heads Tribute) playing at Beat Kitchen, Sunday 10/30 brings out a great bill that I literally just got wind of - Sebadoh and Chicago locals Mazes play Schubas. Not sure if it's a Halloween show or not, but I'm just wondering how did this fly under the radar!?!

And finally, we all know what's happening Monday 10/31, right?? But if you're not in a Fugazi/Exit mood, you can always head to Empty Bottle to see Sybris play with Apteka, Touched by a Ghoul and the Bingers. Or do it all!

Interview with Slushy from Chicago

I first met Chris Kramer, lead singer and primary songwriter for Slushy at my old work. We immediately started trading guitar gear... I think he still may have one of my old amps. Anyway, he as he explains below he first started playing guitar and singing solo in Chicago over a drum machine/tracks before building a full band. I really like his deceptively intricate pop/punk song writing, and he's got one of the best and most natural singing voices I've heard in a long time. We're excited to play with Chris, who will be backed by the Chicago-area Uh-Bones and will be playing songs by the Velvet Underground and Nico our Halloween Show at Exit. The show also features Cealed Kasket and Darkness & Goblin King, is FREE and starts at 9pm.

- Can you tell us a bit about the evolution of Slushy from Omaha to Chicago?

Slushy is a Chicago band. I started writing garagey/pop songs in 2007 when I was living in Omaha, and some of the songs that Slushy plays date back to then but most are newer. Shortly after moving to Chicago I started playing solo as Kramer Versus Kramer, but that we just a transitory phase. Then I got a band together, then after a bit we came up with a better name. The first real Slushy show was in July 2010 at the last ever Mopery show.

- I know you've played your share of house shows as well as Chicago venues. What do you think are the benefits of either, and is there any preference at all for either format?

Slushy has been lucky to play a lot of well known venues in Chicago, like the Empty Bottle, Schubas, Subterranean and Beat Kitchen. We've also played a lot of DIY venues. Big venues are cool because they feel like an important stepping stone. But it takes a lot more people to reach the "fun" threshold at real venues. People feel like they have to be more reserved at venue shows, and can only have fun if there are tons of other people and they can get lost in anonymity. Usually you have to play a lot of poorly attended, little-fun shows before the venue will have you back to play a well attended show. House shows and alternative venues seem to attract people who are already friends and don't give a shit about what everyone will think if they dance and have fun. So even if there are only 10 people there, those 10 people are having a blast.

- I love your song "Teenage Frankenstein" - are you working on any other holiday-themed songs?

Not actively, but I really like making up songs, so who knows what the next one I make up will be about.

- Why did you pick Velvet Underground and Nico as your Halloween Band?

They have a great spooky, creepy, evil vibe, but they really just wrote great pop songs. Plus I really like the guys in Uh Bones and have been looking for a reason to play music with them.

*NOTE: I'm hoping interviews and features with bands we play with can be a new ongoing feature or asset of this blog. In my opinion, although this blog's purpose is to inform people about Bully in the Hallway, a big part of who we are and what we do revolves around the scene we support and the bands/artists with whom we have the privilege of sharing a stage. - B.K.
